This site exists because when I got my Blu-ray player and HDTV something happened, and I went from being a guy who liked watching the occasional movie to an absolute film freak. My wife says I have a disease because I can’t stop buying movies on Blu-ray.
I found that I wanted to maximize the purchasing power of my dollars, and so dug around for reviews. At first I wanted things that had the best picture quality possible regardless of movie quality, then I started looking for best overall content, and then I learned what we all learn whenever we delve deep enough into any sufficiently complex field: quantitative metrics don’t really work well to measure things that are qualitative.
BUT, by comparing a lot of ineffective quantitative measurements, you can shorten the learning curve. If it’s only on one list, maybe it’s great, maybe it isn’t. If it’s on 9 out of 10 lists, chances are it isn’t gonna suck. But it might! This is not a perfect science, it is about accumulation of information.
I was cross-referencing so much data that I thought it made sense for others to benefit from my efforts. And with Amazon.com’s associate program, you could even reward me for my efforts simply by doing what you were going to do anyway–buy the movie you wanted. If you click on any Amazon link here and complete the purchase within some number of hours, I get a small percentage of the sale. You don’t pay a dime more, Amazon just likes when others advertise for them. If you’re against that, cool, do some copy/pasting or extra typing and I’m none the wiser.
There are other lists not included here, these are just the ones I found most useful in guiding me to the movies I tend to like. Your mileage may vary. I love the look of films shot on 70mm, not everyone does. I love Blu-ray so much I will buy a movie that’s not considered Great if it’s got amazing picture quality. I like foreign films. I like a lot of things, and that’s why I wanted to make this cross-indexed way of viewing the information I’ve been collecting.
I’m way too ignorant of all that’s out there hardware-wise to suggest much in the way of home theater equipment to you, but I can without any reservations whatsoever give my recommendation on a Blu-ray player: the OPPO BDP-93 rocks my socks.
